Shrimpin’Fast

Five years breeding and shipping high-grade aquarium shrimp across Europe, under permit, alone.

Founder 2020 — 2025 Belgium, shipping across Europe
Context

It began by accident. I bought a few shrimp because I liked how they looked, they bred, and I ran out of room. Selling the excess to local fish shops turned into an online business, and eventually into breeding for grade rather than volume.

What I did

Five years breeding high-grade red crystal shrimp and shipping them across Europe, alone and as a registered business. Breeding, tanks, permits, packaging, customer service and the paperwork for every shipment.

What it shows

Running a regulated, fragile-goods operation end to end, and building reliability into it.

The work

01

Breeding for grade, not for volume

I started with B and A grade stock. Red crystals are graded on colour coverage and depth, and moving a line up takes generations of keeping the best animals and culling the rest.

The aim was to raise the whole line, not produce one showpiece. Chasing a single perfect shrimp narrows the gene pool and the line collapses within a few generations. By the end I was near a stable SS, with the occasional SSS sold at a premium.

What shipping a live animal actually requires

Twelve-hour fast before transit. Double-bagged in breather bags. Boxes rated to 125 kg so they survive being stacked, with the bags held so they cannot move.

Heat or cold packs depending on the season and the destination. Next-day guaranteed only, no Friday dispatch, nothing before a regional public holiday. All of it through UPS Express, whose trucks run temperature-controlled.

The part nobody expects: the regulation

Selling in Wallonia needs a permit, a booked inspection and a visit that examines the setup. Shipping live animals internationally needs an ISC account with the carrier, which needs business credentials. That is what forced me to register the company.

Cross-border health rules were a second layer. Every shipment logged, and larger consignments requiring a FASFC certificate, with an inspector verifying them before departure.

The failure that changed the process

My first carrier said their trucks were insulated. I took that at face value and shipped without temperature packs. Orders arrived in poor condition.

That sent me to UPS Express, and to the packs, the padding and the box rating. Deaths never stopped entirely. Above three per order I replaced the batch and refunded part of it. It cost money and it kept the customers.

How it ended

The JayaUnited internship started and the three could not coexist. Shipping happens on weekdays, so everything had to be done after work.

Closing it cost me income and removed a great deal of pressure. It was never a plan. It arrived, and I ran it for five years.
